How to Write a Statement of Purpose for a Scholarship

A bad statement of purpose can ruin your application. After grades and test scores, the statement of purpose will determine whether the reader wants you. With full scholarships at stake, a generic statement of purpose could mean losing the whole scholarship.

As of this month, Gates Cambridge has a deadline of 8th December 2026 (varies by course). EPFL has a deadline of 15th December, and then Erasmus Mundus programmes have individual deadlines until January. Hungary has not announced new dates yet. Fulbright has closed in most countries.

These dates were checked in November 2026. Always double-check the dates on the official page.

What Is Usually Covered by Fully Funded Scholarships?

  • Tuition and/or full tuition waiver
  • Monthly stipend
  • Some include travel costs or a travel grant.
  • Some include health insurance.
  • Some include housing.

Many of the scholarships listed here do not fully fund you. EPFL offers a fixed amount per semester, but tuition and rent remain. Stipendium Hungaricum offers tuition but not all living expenses. Erasmus Mundus only offers its full scholarship to the top-ranked applicants.

A statement of purpose is a targeted essay. It should outline what you will study, why you want to study it at this school, why you are the right candidate, and what you will do next. Different schools have different names for it. Cambridge asks for a personal statement or statement of interest. EPFL and Erasmus Mundus ask for a motivation letter. Fulbright asks for a statement of grant purpose. Although it is the same task, the required length and questions vary. Always check the rules for each school.

Deadlines

  • Gates Cambridge – Deadline depends on the course, either 8th December 2026 or 6th January 2027. Some sources say 2nd or 3rd December. Check the official page.
  • EPFL Master Excellence Fellowships – Deadline 15th December 2026. The second round varies. Check the official page.
  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters – Varies. Most programmes have deadlines between October and January.
  • Stipendium Hungaricum – No dates announced. Last round closed 15th January 2026.
  • Fulbright Foreign Student Program – Closed in most countries. Dates vary by country.

Current or Soon to Be Open

1. Gates Cambridge Scholarship

This is for studying a master’s or PhD at the University of Cambridge. Open to anyone except British nationals. Apply through the course application on Cambridge.

Deadline – Depends on the course. 8th December 2026 or 6th January 2027 by 11:59 p.m. (UK time). Some sources say 2nd or 3rd December. Earlier deadline for US citizens living in the US was 14th October 2026.

What It Covers – Fees, GBP 23,152 per year stipend, travel costs, visa costs, and health surcharge. Check the official page for the current stipend.

Things to Note – You will need to write two pieces of text. Cambridge asks for a personal statement or statement of interest. One MRes page says 5,000 characters on why you want to study, your experience, and your future. The Gates form will ask for another personal statement. There is conflicting information on how long it should be. Some sources say 500 words, 3,000 characters, or 1,000 words. Check the official page. Cambridge applications must be in PDF format and less than 2 MB. PhD applicants will usually need to include a research proposal.

2. EPFL Master Excellence Fellowships

This is for master’s students only. EPFL is located in Switzerland.

Deadline – 15th December 2026. Your application must be paid for and validated by this date. The second round varies. Some sources say 31st March 2027. The official page I viewed said the second round for some internal applicants would be 15th April. Check the official page.

What It Covers – CHF 10,000 per semester (up to CHF 40,000), reserved housing. Some sources say up to CHF 32,000. Check the official page. Tuition and rent will still be payable. It does not fully fund you.

Things to Note – You can only apply to one master’s programme per year. External applicants simply tick a box on the master’s form. No additional documents are needed. Therefore, the statement of admission will include both scenarios. Some sources say the motivation letter is limited to 1,000 words on EPFL’s page. Check the official page.

3. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

This is for master’s students only. You will study at two or more universities across different European countries. Apply directly to each programme.

Deadline – Varies. Most programmes have deadlines between October 2026 and January 2027. One programme, Mundus Journalism, has a deadline of 10th January 2027. Check individual programme pages.

What It Covers – EUR 1,400 per month. The full degree will be between 12 and 24 months. Programmes also cover tuition, some travel, and visa costs. Check individual programme pages.

Things to Note – There is no set letter. Some sources say GLODEP requires 500 words, MESPOM requires 350 words on 4 specific points, and EMLE requires one page. Mundus Journalism asks for short-form answers. Usually, these are in English and up to 5,000 characters. Write a new letter for each programme.

4. Stipendium Hungaricum

This is for studying a bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s, or PhD in Hungary.

Deadline – No dates announced. A page on a Hungarian Embassy website says the 2027/2028 call has not been published, so no application is open. The last round opened on 17th November 2025 and closed on 15th January 2026 at 2:00 p.m. (Central European Time). Likely to open in mid-November and close in mid-January.

What It Covers – Full tuition, stipend, and housing. Some sources say the stipend does not fully cover living costs. Consider it as tuition and partial living costs.

Things to Note – Includes a motivation letter. One Hungarian university asks why you chose the programme you are studying. Some advise keeping it to one page. Others say up to three pages but advise one page. Check the official application guide. You must be nominated by the sending partner in your country.

Closed for 2026 – Plan for Next Year

5. Fulbright Foreign Student Program

This is for studying a master’s or PhD in the United States. Apply through the Fulbright Commission or US Embassy in your country.

Deadline – Closed in most countries. Country deadlines for 2027–2028 varied between August and October 2026, with some earlier. Dates vary greatly. Likely to open in spring 2027 for 2028–2029.

What It Covers – Full tuition, textbooks, travel costs, stipend, and health insurance. Check your country page for specifics.

Things to Note – The main text should be a statement of grant purpose. Usually one page. Check your country page. It should outline what you will do in the US. Not a life story. Some countries do not offer it for MBA or Clinical Medicine. Check the rules for your field.

How to Select the Right Scholarship

Match Your Profile

Write in a simple structure. Start with what you want to study and why. Then provide evidence from your background. Explain why you chose this school. Finally, explain what you will do afterwards.

Use one strong example. Example line: “I spent two years cleaning flood data at a water office, so I know the gap this course fills.”

Do not include your CV. Select two or three facts and explain them.

Check Your Country

Always check the rules for each school. Length, language, and questions vary.

Include the name of the school, course, and country. Example: “Your course on remote sensing fits my plan to predict crop yield.”

Check if your country has a sending partner or eligibility list. Hungary uses sending partners.

Avoid a Last-Minute Rush

Start your draft 3–4 weeks before the deadline.

Write a new statement for each programme. Do not use the same text.

Ask one person to read through it. Ask what they remembered.

Common Mistakes

Writing Like a CV

Weak: “I finished my BSc in 2023, then worked two years at a lab.”

Better: “Two years of lab work taught me how to clean noisy data, and your course teaches the models I still lack.”

Being Generic

Weak: “I want to study machine learning.”

Better: “I want to predict crop yield from satellite images, and I’ll start with your remote sensing course.”

Going Over the Word Limit

Bad: 2 pages when the school asked for 1,000 words.

Better: Trim down to the word limit. Only include your best example.

Conclusion

The soonest deadlines are Gates Cambridge (depending on the course, 8th December 2026 or 6th January 2027) and EPFL (15th December). Erasmus Mundus has early and mid-January deadlines. Hungary has not posted new dates. Fulbright has closed in most countries.

Tonight, open the Cambridge course page and write down the funding deadline and statement rules.
