Documents Required for International Scholarships

Not having the right documents is a common reason why people get turned away from scholarships. Not having a reference letter or a clear transcript can mean you lose a whole year. Every funding program requires different documentation. The term “required documents” usually refers to the main documents you will need to complete applications, along with some additional documents for specific awards.

Gates Cambridge is currently open. The deadline is 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your course. Erasmus Mundus programs and Chinese universities have deadlines in early 2027. Türkiye Bursları has not been officially announced yet. Chevening and Commonwealth Master’s have both closed.

These dates were checked in November 2026. Deadlines can change, so always double-check the official website.

What Do Fully Funded Scholarships Usually Cover?

  • Tuition fees waived
  • Monthly living allowance
  • Health insurance or contribution
  • Return airfare
  • Accommodation or contribution

Many awards will be partially funded. Some will only cover tuition, leaving you to fund the rest. Always check the funding section.

1. Gates Cambridge Scholarship (University of Cambridge, UK)

This scholarship is only for postgraduate study. It provides funding for PhD programs and some one-year master’s programs.

Deadline: 8 December 2026 (Tuesday) or 6 January 2027 (Wednesday). This depends on your course page. Most sources state 6 January, but I found one source that stated 7 January, so be sure to check the official website.

Funding: Tuition, living allowance, airfare, and visa fees. Funding for PhD programs can last up to four years.

Note: You will complete one application to Cambridge and select the Gates option. You will need to include a transcript, CV, personal statement, and a Gates reference. If you are applying for a PhD, you will also require a research proposal. A guide site says you will need two academic references and one Gates reference. References must be submitted by the deadline, so ask early. UK citizens cannot apply.

2. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (European Union)

This scholarship is only for master’s programs. It involves studying at two or more European universities.

Deadline: Varies by program. Most deadlines fall between October 2026 and January 2027. Euroculture opened on 15 October 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027 for scholarship applicants.

Funding: Tuition, monthly stipend, and health insurance. Euroculture mentions a monthly stipend, so check each program.

Note: There is no central portal. You will need to apply to each program and state that you would like to apply for the scholarship. Most programs will ask for your degree certificate and transcripts. Many will ask for recommendation letters and a statement of purpose. Requirements and formatting differ, so check each program. You cannot apply if you have an existing Erasmus Mundus master’s or PhD grant.

3. Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)

This scholarship is for students studying for a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree. A notice on a Chinese Embassy page states that the 2027/28 round is open.

Deadline: Varies by university. The dates I found range from 31 January to 1 April. Check the university page you are applying to.

Funding: Tuition, dorm room or accommodation subsidy, monthly stipend, and medical insurance. The stipend will depend on your level of study.

Note: The notice states that there is an application form and many appendices, including a Power of Attorney form and a sample CSCA score report. Some universities will ask for a signed acceptance letter from your supervisor. NEVER pay any application fees unless you have confirmed them on the university’s own website.

4. Türkiye Bursları (Turkey)

This scholarship is for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs. Dates for 2027 have not been officially announced.

Deadline: Likely to be 10 January to 20 February 2027. This is the usual time frame. Be sure to check the official portal for the exact dates.

Funding: Tuition, accommodation, monthly stipend, airfare, health insurance, and a Turkish language course. This information is based on the guides checked.

You will only need to provide language test scores if your program requires them. If you are applying for a PhD, you will also need a research proposal and writing sample. Guides differ on whether you will need an English test. Check the official page. You can only make one application per cycle.

Work completed after graduation will count towards the 2,800 hours of experience.

6. Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships (UK)

This scholarship is only for master’s programs and is available to eligible low- and middle-income countries within the Commonwealth.

Deadline: Most sites state that the deadline was 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST. One guide mentioned 15 October. Check the official page. Your nominating agency may have an earlier deadline. The next round is likely to open in September 2027.

Choosing the Right Scholarship

Pick scholarships that match your profile.

Choose Scholarships That Match Your Degree Level

Choose scholarships that match your level of study. Gates, Chevening, and Commonwealth are all for postgraduate study only.

Count how many documents they ask for. PhD programs require a research proposal, while leadership awards require essays and work history.

Start with the scholarships for which you already have the most documents.

Check Your Country’s Eligibility First

  • Commonwealth: Requires a nominating agency in your country. Find your nominating agency.
  • China: Chinese embassies have their own notices. Check the notice for your country.
  • Gates: Not available to UK citizens.
  • Chevening: Only accepts applicants from eligible countries.

Consider the Deadlines

References can take the longest. Ask this week.

Erasmus Mundus and Chinese universities have different deadlines. Put them into one list.

Ask for official transcripts early. University offices can be very slow in December.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the Same Document List for All Awards

Every funding program will ask for different documents. Check the individual checklists.

2. Asking for References the Week Before

Quality references take time. Give your referees a month. Provide them with the deadline in writing.

3. Uploading Unclear or Cropped Documents

If the documents cannot be read, they cannot be assessed. Scan them flat, in clear colours, and as full pages.

Conclusion

The closest deadline is Gates Cambridge: 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your course. Euroculture closes on 15 January 2027. Chinese universities start to close in late January. Türkiye Bursları is likely to open in January.

Email two people who can write your references tonight. Tell them that the Gates Cambridge deadline is 8 December.
